In another incident, gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in Makhachkala, where an officer was injured. The regional head of Dagestan, Sergey Melikov, has denounced the attackers' attempt to destabilize the social fabric and praised the bravery of police officers, some of whom have tragically lost their lives in the line of duty. Melikov announced the establishment of an operational headquarters and the start of a counter-operation, codenamed “Interception”, while urging the public to remain calm in the face of this adversity.
The Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia quickly launched a terrorist investigation under the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. Their goal is to establish the identity of the attackers and hold them accountable for their actions.
