Determining the right time to introduce a smartphone to a child can be a difficult decision for parents. In response to this, Apple has been offering an alternative solution for the past few years with its Apple Watch for children. This device offers communication features without the wide variety of applications found on a smartphone. Now, it looks like Apple plans to improve that offering even further.
The tech giant is reportedly eyeing the introduction of plastic casings for its next-generation Apple Watch SE. This change could allow for a wider range of colors, making the watches more attractive and kid-friendly. While Apple hasn't officially commented on this, the company recently added branding to its website promoting the Apple Watch as an ideal choice for children.
The Apple Watch SE, priced at $249, is being marketed as a forerunner of a children's smartphone. It offers many of the popular features found in its more expensive counterpart, but with a smaller and less capable screen. Importantly, the budget device includes mobile data and phone calling capabilities, reinforcing Apple's message of promoting independence for children and peace of mind for parents.
According to a survey conducted by analyst Piper Sandler in May, more than a third of American teenagers own an Apple Watch. The wearable device could serve as an alternative for students at schools that now restrict the use of smartphones on campus.
While Apple hasn't revealed when it plans to release its next Apple Watch, based on past release patterns, a 2024 update seems likely. The company is also expected to release a new version of its budget iPhone SE, which currently it is priced at $429, next year.
