Despite concerns over pollution in the River Seine, the Paris 2024 Olympic triathlon trials are expected to go ahead as planned from Tuesday. Water quality, affected by last week's heavy rains, caused the cancellation of two swim practices on Sunday and Monday. With temperatures expected to reach 34ºC on Tuesday, the day of the men's event, the situation is being closely monitored.
The men's triathlon is scheduled to start at 07:00 BST (08:00 local time), with a final decision on its start at 03:00 BST (04:00 local time). The women's event is scheduled for Wednesday, and the mixed team competition is scheduled for Monday, August 5.
Lambis Konstantinidis, director of operations for Paris 2024, assured that there are several contingency plans if the water quality is not considered satisfactory. One such plan includes holding both men's and women's competitions on the same day. Another option is to use the contingency days built into the program.
Konstantinidis also mentioned the possibility of adjusting the schedule of mixed relays, although he stressed that they cannot accommodate too many changes in a single day. As a last resort, the event could be turned into a duathlon, but this is considered an extreme measure.
Despite the challenges, organizers remain optimistic. “We're not there yet, and we're confident that tomorrow, Tuesday, will be a good day,” Konstantinidis said.
