Obama's Netflix apocalypse movie has many viewers on edge: 'It's happening'

-

A new movie on Netflix has viewers wondering what kind of cryptic warning message former President Barack Obama might be sending.

Viewers of the movie “Leave the World Behind” reacted to the fine line between fiction and reality after seeing the work of the production company founded by Obama and his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama. The backlash and various conspiracy theories that arose after the film's release prompted a response from the director that rejected Obama's ideas and any underlying message.

Based on a 2020 novel by Rumaan Alam and starring Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali and Kevin Bacon, this first feature film from the Obama company, High Ground, was directed, written and produced by Sam Esmail and se centers on a nationwide cyber attack.

“A family's getaway to a luxury rental home takes an ominous turn when a cyberattack knocks out their devices and two strangers show up at their door.” reads the description of the movie on the Netflix site.

“President Obama, with the experience he has, was able to ground me a little bit on how things could develop in reality,” Esmail he said Vanity Fair in September, describing her work with the former president.

Despite being a work of fiction, the film gave viewers a strange sense of what could be a reality.

But Esmail threw cold water on all the speculations in an interview with collider.

“I think the craziest part of it all is that President Obama showed up a couple of months before we started shooting, so the script was basically written and done. He obviously gave notes on the script, but the bones of the story and the sequences were already written,” said the “Robot” creator. “I would just say they're pretty wrong about their signage. I had nothing to do with it.”

“Because President Obama is a movie buff, he really focused his notes on trying to film what was in the book in a really interesting way. The book was on his reading list, it's one of his favorites , and I really wanted to do justice for the book and this theme about mistrust and this is a cautionary tale about what could happen if we don't have that community or bond that holds us together,” the director explained.

“So it really hit the marks in terms of character, empathy, and elements of disaster as well. It was really cross-cutting. And again, it was all in the pursuit of making it a good movie. That was their main goal,” Esmail added.

Actress Julia Roberts admitted there is “a lot to unpack” in the film.

“Sam [Esmail] he calls it a disaster movie. Ethan [Hawke] it's called a thriller. It's both. But for me, it's a story about this family, this husband and this wife, who are kind of opposites. He is the calmest, most relaxed. And she's a prickly workaholic,” she said in an interview with CBS News.

“There's a lot to unpack, you know when you're talking about this movie,” the actress added. “There are so many different ideas to talk about. There's so much fragility in the world to talk about. There's a lot that's really in our capable hands that we're not really responsible for.”

Viewers continued to drop their X reactions and theories about the movie and the Obamas' involvement.
