The New York Times Editorial Board is urging newly crowned presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris to do a better job than lame-duck President Joe Biden at answering reporters' questions.
“Vice President Kamala Harris, now the presumptive Democratic nominee, has a chance to encourage and embrace the kind of scrutiny the public has so far had little opportunity to witness during the 2024 race,” the paper said in a friday column titled “Americans deserve more debate and transparency in this election,” a jab at Biden.

“Americans deserve a campaign that tests the candidates' strengths and weaknesses; that highlights their differences and allows us to examine their plans; that motivates people to vote by giving them a clear explanation of how their choice in this election will affect their lives. Americans deserve the opportunity to ask questions of those who seek to lead their government,” the Times Editorial Board wrote.
The paper said the opening week of the “border czar” has offered “promising signs” for change in the first week of his campaign, saying Harris “must do more and do it fast”.
“Mrs. Harris should challenge Mr. Trump to a series of debates or town halls on issues of national importance, including the economy, foreign policy, health care and immigration. Mr. Trump says he is ready and willing to participate in the debates once Democrats have officially selected a candidate. Americans will benefit from comparing the two candidates directly,” the Editorial Board suggested.
“Candidates have abundant opportunities to speak directly to voters, through social media and tightly controlled public appearances, without the mediation of journalists. Most voters, however, will never be able to speak directly to the candidates,” the newspaper said, taking a shot at Biden, who falsely portrayed his administration as the “most transparent” in American history during his tenure. 2020 White House campaign.
“President Biden has rarely granted the media permission to ask questions on behalf of the American people, and on the rare occasions he did, his team sometimes sent out scripted questions. It left him ill-prepared to on the campaign trail and to take on his rival. Mr. Trump, too, rarely asks questions. Ms. Harris has a chance to do better,” the editors said.
The Editorial Board then laid the groundwork for the same kind of carefully managed events that Biden's handlers had organized for him.
“Engaging with voters is especially important for Ms. Harris because she would be the first major-party presidential nominee in modern times who did not go through the state primary process, in which voters have the opportunity to gauge the candidates and ask questions about the issues that matter most to their communities,” the piece stated.
“Addressing small crowds in small venues and taking questions from local reporters are rituals during the primaries for a reason. Unlike large public rallies, they are opportunities to meet on equal terms, and are an education for both the candidate and for voters,” the paper says, adding: “Good leaders accept scrutiny. Ms. Harris now has a chance to prove she will be the kind of leader she deserves the nation.”
A key point in the Democratic elite coup against the geriatric incumbent who was the first major newspaper to ask him to step down after the CNN debate disaster, the “Grey Lady” will now be tasked with ·enlighten the public that Harris, a deeply unpopular. and hire incompetent DEI, is the right person to inherit the most important job in the country.
