Law enforcement agencies have reported a significant increase in crimes committed on unregistered two-wheelers over the past few years. In a recent operation, an unidentified NYPD officer attempted to pull over an 18-year-old moped rider, but was dragged down the street.

Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry shared photos of the successful operation.
Mayor Eric Adams and Commissioner Edward A. Caban have also joined the fight against illegal vehicles in New York. Adams has uploaded a video of two bulldozers crushing illegal bicycles seized by the NYPD. The mayor aims to address the exponential increase in criminals using motorized scooters, bicycles or other illegal and unregistered vehicles to rob New Yorkers of their property.
Gary K. Wiepert wrote for the American Thinker in April that “Illegal mopeds are the latest victims of criminal dysfunction in New York.” The article quotes a city representative, who stated that “there are 224 e-bike thefts in the first 65 days of the year, compared to 383 in all of 2020; several of them have turned violent; more than 20% of the stolen goods were phones.”
The recent spike in scooter thefts and criminal offenses is putting residents on edge, with an increase of 79 illegal scooter and moped thefts in the first five months of 2024. The NYPD reports that the increase in crime is due to largely to criminals fleeing crime scenes. in these illegal vehicles. The NYPD has impounded more than 41,000 illegal vehicles this past year alone. In an operation against a member of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, the officers suffered a violent altercation with the motorist, who opened fire on the police with an unlicensed gun. Reports suggest the minor is part of “an invading criminal army”. Law enforcement sources say the gang members use mopeds to steal cellphones.
Illegal and dangerous vehicles like mopeds and scooters have been terrorizing our people for too long.
That was until our administration stepped in and made public safety a priority, removing over 41,000 of these pesky vehicles from our streets. pic.twitter.com/7fIkqlcCDI

The NYPD's efforts to crack down on moped and scooter-related crime are coming to the forefront of New Yorkers' attention. Despite the dangerous tactics used by moped criminals, the officers are unwavering in their quest to maintain law and order in the city.
