“None of us would be treated the same”

A New Mexico judge has dismissed the manslaughter case against Alec Baldwin, who killed a woman in a tragic 2021 movie set accident, a major victory for the hot-headed actor, though not passes without criticism.

On Friday, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the indictment with prejudice, meaning the actor cannot be charged again, ruling that the prosecution withheld evidence from Baldwin's legal team.

The “Beetlejuice” star, 66, broke down in tears in a Santa Fe courtroom as the judge spared him time behind bars for the October 2021 fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust” who was hit by a live bullet after Baldwin fired a gun in her direction.

“The late discovery of this evidence during the trial has prevented the effective use of the evidence in such a way as to affect the fundamental fairness of the proceedings,” the judge said. “If this conduct does not rise to the level of bad faith, it certainly comes close enough to bad faith to show signs of burning.”

Baldwin could have faced up to 18 months in prison if convicted and while the actor, his family and fans celebrated, X users reacted, with some expressing the view that justice had been misled and that ruling only further demonstrates that America now has a two-tiered legal system.

“Our goal from the beginning was to seek justice for Halyna Hutchins,” said DA Mary Carmack-Altwies in a statement. “We are disappointed that the case did not go to a jury.”
