No signings despite the renewal of the midfield

-

Despite a complete overhaul of their midfield last summer, Liverpool are yet to make a signing in Arne Slot's first transfer window as manager. This surprises many, especially given the high-profile signings of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo last year. These new additions replaced long-standing players such as James Milner, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, ushering in a new era at Anfield.

Many expected a similar recruiting strategy this year to support Slot's vision for the team. However, as the August 31st transfer deadline approaches, Liverpool remain silent on the transfer front. This has left many wondering why the club has yet to make a move.

In July, Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes shed some light on the club's recruitment strategy. He revealed that Slot wanted to properly evaluate the entire team before making any decisions. He also hinted that the club would be opportunistic in their approach to recruitment.

The club explored a number of opportunities, including a potential £75m deal for Anthony Gordon and a £45m deal for Joe Gomez. They also considered Leny Yoro and Martin Zubimendi, but none of these deals materialized. That leaves Liverpool as the only Premier League club yet to make a permanent signing this summer.

Slot's preference for a technically competent No. 6 player is clear. He has been experimenting with that position during the preseason and believes it is a shallow pool on the market. If a high-quality stylistic fit cannot be found, Slot is considering an in-house solution.

Liverpool's recruitment approach is also influenced by the fact that Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are in the final year of their contracts. This uncertainty affects both short- and long-term plans, and the club needs clarity on this matter soon.

The club's reluctance to offer lengthy deals to 30-year-old players is also a factor. However, Van Dijk and Salah remain key contributors. The potential loss of these players could come at a considerable cost to the club.

Liverpool's approach this summer may be conservative, but it's clear the club's recruitment strategy revolves around next steps with Alexander-Arnold, Salah and Van Dijk. Despite the challenges, Liverpool remain optimistic about the potential of the current squad and the development of young talents such as Trey Nyoni. As the transfer window closes, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will take advantage of any last-minute opportunities.
