Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley avoided answering whether she believes a man can become a woman during a virtual town hall in Iowa on Sunday, according to audio obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Haley canceled a previously scheduled campaign event in Dubuque, Iowa, due to extreme weather just a day before Monday's caucus, opting instead for a telethon town hall, CNN reported. The former ambassador was asked point-blank if she believes a man can become a woman, but she didn't answer directly, instead offering that “people can live however they want” once they're over 18 years, according to the audio.
“There have been a lot of things that have been talked about when it comes to all these roles and all these issues. I strongly believe that we should not allow any gender reassignment surgery on anyone under the age of 18. Point. Kids now can't get tattoos until they're 18. We shouldn't be making them change bodies permanently until they're 18,” Haley said. “… After 18, we want to make sure people can live the way they want to live. I don't think the government should control anybody's life. You're going to live how you want to live, you should be free to live how you want to live. And … the government and everyone else should stay out of your way.”
“I think, you know, you always have to believe in freedom and allow people to live their lives the way they want to live, and if they choose to, you know, I don't think the government should have any say. on this one. Thanks for that question,” Haley added.
The individual who asked the question, who was identified as John, asked for Haley's opinion on the matter, citing former President Donald Trump's position. The former president was he asked Megyn Kelly asked the same question in a September interview, but she didn't answer definitively.
“Yeah, I mean, I think first of all, let's look at the facts,” Haley replied. “You know, this is a hard truth for me, I think Trump was the right president at the right time. I agree with a lot of his policies. But, rightly or wrongly, chaos follows him. And everybody on this call knows that. And we can't be a country in disarray and a world on fire and go through four more years of chaos. We're not going to survive that. And I think a lot of that is how it's communicated and what's going on. We just It puts everyone in a mess and we can't afford a Kamala Harris president.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been too he asked the question and answered directly “no” for a interview with Glenn Beck in September.
“How ridiculous that we even ask this question?” DeSantis replied.
The latest NBC News/Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll released Saturday before the caucus found Haley in second place with 20 percent support behind Trump's 48 percent, followed by DeSantis at 16 percent and conservative businessman Vivek Ramaswamy at 8 percent.
