California Governor Gavin Newsom took part in what was widely seen as a cheeky photo op when he helped clean up a homeless encampment in Los Angeles.
According to a 2023 report by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, California has the largest homeless population in the country. This is largely due to the policies that Newsom has pushed throughout his political career.
“There are no more excuses. You've got the money, you've got the flexibility, you've got the green light, you've got state support, and the public is asking for it,” Newsom said at the time, according to Crossroads Today. “I'm here on behalf of 40 million Californians who are fed up. I am here because I am one of them. I want to see results.”
Fox 11 Los Angeles reporter Matthew Seedorff shared a video of Newson cleaning up debris at X, adding, “California Governor @GavinNewsom is in Mission Hills, CA helping clean up a homeless encampment. Fa About two weeks ago, Newsom issued an executive order asking state officials to eliminate homeless camps. It tells me that cities need to have more urgency.”

The Democratic governor issued an executive order in July in response to a Supreme Court ruling in favor of an Oregon city that admitted homeless people to sleep outside, ordering state agencies to ” to urgently address homeless encampments while respecting the dignity and safety of Californians experiencing homelessness.” ” according to Newsom's office.
Local governments now have the tools they need to address the decades-long problem of homelessness.

Suddenly looking very much like a Republican, Newsom cited the conditions in which the homeless live as a reason to close the sprawling encampments when he issued the executive order.
“[It is] Urgent action is needed to tackle dangerous camps, which subject homeless people living there to extreme weather conditions, fires, predatory and criminal activities and widespread substance use, which harm their health, safety and well-being, and that also threaten security. and the viability of nearby businesses and neighborhoods and undermine the cleanliness and usability of parks, water supplies and other public resources,” he said.
Note that some areas of the state provide guaranteed income to the “homeless,” as Democrats like to call the homeless. An incentive that will surely exacerbate the problem.
Gavin posted the following message Thursday on his official X account: “The homelessness crisis must be addressed with urgency, dignity and compassion. The state has provided unprecedented resources for local governments to address dangerous encampments and provide people the care and services they need. No more excuses.”

Here's a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen in X:

Oh, when it was convenient for him, Newsom supported Mayor Bass by publicly shaming reporters for asking if it was the homeless who started the fire under the 10 Freeway. Is he Mr. Tough now? ridiculous https://t.co/aXuxrkWifp
