“Let's be clear, this is the most important piece of legislation to address property crime in modern California history. I thank the bipartisan group of lawmakers, our retail partners and advocates for putting public safety above politics Newsom said in a statement. “While some are trying to take us back to ineffective and costly policies of the past, these new laws present a better way forward: they make our communities safer and provide meaningful tools to help law enforcement arrest criminals and hold them accountable.”
“These bills will strengthen existing laws. They're going to improve other laws and address challenges that are outside the scope of previous initiatives and laws,” the Sacramento alderman said during a news conference Friday morning inside a Home Depot in San Jose. “This is the issue of organized retail theft, the issue of serial robbery, the issue that is front and center in the consciousness of so many Californians.”
Videos of brazen robberies and flash mob raids on commercial establishments in which thugs rush in and steal armloads of merchandise have gone viral on social media, reinforcing the perception that Newsom's California is a gangster state without law directed by criminal mimes. “woke” fanatics.
“This goes to the heart of the matter, and it does so in a thoughtful and prudent way,” the governor said of the package. “This is the real deal.”
A few hours after Newsom's press conference, thieves struck three Los Angeles-area 7-Eleven stores in a 20-minute period, stealing food and drinks and escaping on bicycles.

Republicans criticized Newsom's sudden interest in addressing the crime problem, suggesting it is too little, too late.

Brian Dahle, R-Beiber. seconds in the Los Angeles Times. “While I supported these measures, they should have been done a long time ago and will not reverse the damage done by previous policies.”
Newsom “doesn't deserve an ounce of credit for fighting the crime crisis,” said Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher, who represents Yuba City.
