New studies find that marijuana increases the risk of heart disease and stroke

-

Two studies presented Monday at an American Heart Association conference found that cannabis use was associated with an increased risk of heart failure, stroke and heart attack.

one of the studies observed more than 150,000 adults over the course of four years and found that individuals who reported using marijuana daily were 34% more likely to develop heart failure compared to those who did not report using the substance. The other study looked at people over 65 with cardiovascular risk factors and found that people who used marijuana had a 20 percent higher risk of “a major cardiac or cerebrovascular event while hospitalized,” compared with patients with no risk factors similar ones who did not use cannabis.

“Previous research shows links between marijuana use and cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation, which is known to cause heart failure,” said Dr. Yakubu Bene-Alhasan , principal investigator of the first study. “Marijuana use is not without health problems, and our study provides more data linking its use to cardiovascular conditions.”

This is not the first list of studies suggesting that marijuana use is associated with adverse health outcomes.

A study, examining data on nearly 7 million Danish men and women over nearly three decades, Found evidence that cannabis use among young men may put them at risk of developing schizophrenia. “At the population level, assuming causality, one fifth of schizophrenia cases among young men could be prevented by avoiding [Cannabis use disorder]”, the study said.

More than 30% of marijuana users develop a cannabis use disorder, seconds to a 2015 study.

“It is difficult to separate the effects of marijuana’s chemicals on the cardiovascular system from those caused by irritants and other chemicals that are present in the smoke,” according to a statement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2020. “More research is needed to understand the full impact of marijuana use on the cardiovascular system to determine whether marijuana use leads to an increased risk of death.”

Another study investigating the relationship between marijuana use and mental health Found that teenagers who use weed recreationally are two to four times more likely to develop mental illness than their peers who abstain from the substance.

The marijuana industry in the United States was estimated to be worth $13.2 billion by 2022, seconds to a summary produced by Grand View Research. The industry spend millions lobbying Congress annually, often to ease access to weed. Two marijuana lobbyists sentenced to federal prison for bribing state official in Michigan, The Associated Press reported.

The American Heart Association did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
