Netflix’s Maya Kowalski Weeps Openly After Winning $220 Million Lawsuit Against All Children’s Hospital

However, in its defense, the hospital also tried to defame Kowalski. For example, the hospital’s defense attorneys released photos of her that they said cast doubt on her claims of persistent pain.

Testifying in his own defense, Kowalski walked back the defamation by admitting that he had essentially been hiding his pain in the photos.

“I cried for an hour with my dad before the photo was taken because of the pain in my legs. I only ended up going because my boyfriend was the one paying for the ticket and I felt really bad saying ‘ no,’” he said.

Speaking to The Cut, her attorney, Jennifer Anderson, also dismissed the defamation.

After the case concluded, the jury took only one day to return a verdict against the hospital.

During a phone call with The Cut, one of All Children’s attorneys said the hospital intends to appeal the ruling “based on clear and prejudicial errors at trial and the deliberate conduct of counsel for the plaintiff who misled the jury.”

“The facts and the law remain on our side, and we will continue to defend the life-saving and compassionate care provided to Maya Kowalski by the doctors, nurses and staff at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital and the accountability of all required reporters in Florida you talk if you suspect child abuse,” the lawyer added.
