Netflix has announced that it will stop supporting second and third generation Apple TV models after July 31st. The streaming giant informed its customers via email and also updated its Apple TV support page to reflect the change. The second generation of Apple TV was released in 2010, followed by the third generation model in 2012. Despite their similar design to the current 4K model, these earlier versions are significantly underpowered, offering only HD support and lacking compatibility with the Apple App Store.
Apple itself discontinued support for these devices several years ago, seven years after their respective release dates. Netflix's decision to end support for these older models is unprecedented. The Company periodically reviews usage data and determines which devices no longer justify the resources required to maintain compatibility with its software.
In the past, Netflix has ended support for several older TVs, set-top boxes, Samsung TVs, and Roku devices. The company hasn't disclosed the criteria it uses to decide when to stop supporting a device. It's unclear how many users are still using second- and third-generation Apple TVs, but given their age, the number is likely small.
For those affected by this change, there are limited options to continue watching Netflix on their TVs. One possibility is to stream Netflix from another device connected to their TVs, or they could buy a new set-top box. Importantly, customers using older Apple TV models to access Netflix will not lose their subscriptions and will be able to continue streaming from another device.
The timeline for phasing out support for other Apple TV hardware is uncertain. However, given that the fourth-generation model launched in 2015, just three years after the third-generation version, it may not be long before it also loses Netflix support.
