Navy intercepts Houthi missiles fired at US ship in last spar in Red Sea

-

The US Navy on Wednesday shot down missiles fired by the Yemen-based Houthis against a US merchant ship in the Red Sea.

The Houthis fired a series of ballistic missiles at the M/V Maersk Detroit traveling in the Gulf of Aden; one of the missiles fell into the sea before it could hit its target, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed. The other two missiles were intercepted by the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Gravely before they ever reached their intended target.

The Detroit has not suffered any damage and continues its traffic, according to a US official he said Fox News reporter Liz Frieden.

The Houthis have launched a ravine of attacks on commercial ships and US and coalition forces in the Red Sea since October 7 in a show of support for Hamas' war against Israel. The terrorist group operates from Yemen, but is supported and funded by Iran, the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism.

The Houthi aggression in the Red Sea prompted the Department of Defense (DOD) to create a coalition task force in December to deter attacks on commercial ships transiting the region. This did not deter the Houthis and the coalition task force subsequently launched a series of retaliatory strikes against their military and radar operations centers in Yemen.

The United States and the United Kingdom did another round of retaliatory strikes against the Houthis on Monday as the conflict continues in the region.

The DOD has it evaded he wonders whether he thinks limited strikes targeting Houthi military capabilities will work in the long term. President Joe Biden said last week that he does not to believe the strikes are working, but they noted they will continue regardless.

The DOD did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
