MSNBC contributor Molly Jong-Fast said Wednesday that Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was a “great speaker” whose story of “rural American success” could show how government helps people .
Vice President Kamala Harris introduced Walz, a former teacher and National Guard soldier, as her running mate in the upcoming presidential election during a rally Tuesday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jong-Fast spoke to “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski during his appearance about how Walz's hobbies like hunting and butter carving would help Harris “reach” rural voters.
“I've interviewed Tim Walz before, so he knew what he could do, and the Democratic governors knew what he could do because he was the head of the Democratic Governors Association,” Jong-Fast told Scarborough and Brzezinski. “So when I saw it was in contention, he called me and said he was in contention, and I thought to myself, you know, this guy is a really good speaker, and what I thought was he was reaching out to rural voters. Because here's a guy, you know, he's ice fishing, he's a hunter, he's carving butter, which again, isn't that popular in urban areas. I mean, he's really kind of, you know, he's a rural person.”

“And, you know, he went to college on the GI Bill. He was the highest-ranking draftee. You know, this is a person who is really part of this rural America. And he really advocates how government programs can help people,” Jong-Fast continued. “You know, his father died when he was young and he joined the military to pay for college, and I think that's important. You know, we don't necessarily hear that message as much in politics today. I thought in my head, you know, this guy, he's really kind of a rural American success story. And remember, he was born in Kansas, so he's really part of rural America.”
Walz, who was born in Nebraska seconds in his official bio, flip-flopped on Second Amendment issues as he runs for governor in 2018 after previously receiving glowing ratings from the National Rifle Association while representing a rural Minnesota district in the U.S. House of Representatives. Vouchers signed the legislation became law on April 27, 2023, which made Minnesota a “sanctuary” for child gender reassignments and also banned so-called “conversion therapy.”
