Left-wing attacks on the story took into account the personal background of a string of hits that a congressman criticized for a history of slavery behind a family Bible used for a swearing-in ceremony.
While turning a blind eye to issues such as President Joe Biden's possible indebtedness to foreign entities or rampant acts of literal discrimination occurring in public institutions at all levels, the corporate media saw fit to unearth crimes of defamation members of Congress.
In the sixth part of a series that began in June, Reuters focused on the slave ancestry of Arkansas Rep. French Hill (R), Nevada Rep. Dina Titus (D) and Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy (R).
Of particular note was the piece associating the prosperity of political figures with their ancestors' use of slavery, the media's decision to highlight the family Bible Hill was sworn in as a freshman congressman almost a decade earlier.
“In 2015, when Hill was sworn in to Congress, he used a family Bible. It had been passed down from John M. Gracie's father, a slave owner,” the long piece co-author Lawrence Delevigne and Tom Lasseter, said in front of a picture of the newly minted lawmaker with his family and then-Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH).

The installment began by noting, “About a month after the start of the Civil War, a slaveholding ancestor of the current US Congressman French Hill seemed confident about the future. “Lincoln can't kill me from win unless you take my land and my blacks,” plantation owner Creed Taylor wrote to a relative.”
He then detailed how Taylor's land would increase tenfold as the aforementioned Gracie expanded the plantation and signed contracts with local governments to use prisoners as laborers on the land.
Hill was also quoted as asking the new owner of Gracie's former mansion to “name the development John M” in 2011, with Reuters stating, “Hill's latest public financial disclosures show his net worth between 10.3 and $25.7 million, including his residence in Little Rock. . His estate included a family investment vehicle with a name that echoes his family's ancestral plantation: “New Gascony Company, LLC” .
When neither Hill nor Kennedy commented on the piece, Titus issued a statement saying, “Slavery is a deplorable part of your history, and I have no ties to any long-dead relatives connected to it. We must not forget the cruelty black Americans have endured for generations as we commit to systemic reform that ensures equal rights for all. This principle has guided my personal life, my professional career and my political record.”
Reuters noted that Hill had provided a statement when he began his series in which he referred to slavery as “a scourge” and that “as a nation we must recognize our past, learn from it and look to the future”.
A mix of 118 governors, senators, representatives, Supreme Court justices and five of the six living presidents were counted among those who could trace their heritage back to slave owners. Former President Donald Trump was the only surviving executive not included on his list.
Many saw beyond the defamation with a reality check for the outlet that many Americans, regardless of their current situation, could trace their ancestry back to someone with an unfavorable background.
As many pointed out at the time of your report, having a great-grandfather involved with slavery should not be unusual in the population.
In fact, Angela Davis had TWO white relatives with these connections, both going into her POST-SLAVERY family tree.
