MMA veteran Shannon “The Cannon” Ritch has been released by Phoenix police after claiming self-defense in a fatal shooting incident that took place last Saturday. The altercation, which took place in Phoenix, resulted in the death of Alejandro Samplina.
Phoenix police released the following statement a MMA fight:
On June 15, 2024, at approximately 9:20 p.m., officers responded to the area of 3060 West Agua Fria Freeway for a call of a shooting. Information from the call indicated that at least one person was shot and that the shooter was still at the scene. Officers arrived and took the suspect, identified as Shannon Ritch, into custody without incident and recovered a firearm from his person. The victim, identified as Alejandro Samplina, was located in the parking lot and was transported by Phoenix Fire to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Homicide investigators responded and took over the investigation.
The preliminary investigation found that victim Alejandro Samplina had a dispute with victim/suspect Shannon Ritch over a parking issue. During the argument, Samplina pulled out a knife and chased Ritch around his vehicle. Ritch was able to retrieve his gun from the open door of his vehicle. Samplina proceeded to walk towards Ritch with the knife in a threatening manner, in response, Ritch fired a bullet, striking Samplina. Ritch remained at the scene and was interviewed by detectives. Ritch made a claim of self-defense consistent with the witnesses and surveillance video. He was released at the end of the investigation; charges will be submitted to the Maricopa County District Attorney's Office for review.

Shannon Ritch, 53, who has an MMA record of 58-90, has not been charged with a crime while the investigation continues.
