US Senator Mitt Romney may have attended a meeting with Senate Republicans and Donald Trump last week, but that doesn't mean he's changed his mind about the former president.
The Utah lawmaker, regularly called a RINO by Trump and other Republicans, made it clear in comments to CNN's Manu Raju that his attendance at the Capitol meeting was not a show of support on his behalf.
“I didn't go there to support former President Trump, I went there to hear what he was planning to do if he became president,” Romney said. he said the CNN correspondent on Tuesday.
“With President Trump, it's a personal matter,” he added before going on to invoke the case that found Trump responsible for sexually assaulting columnist E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s.
“You know, I draw a line and say when someone has been found to have, in fact, been sexually assaulting, that's something I'm not going to cross with the person I would want to have as president of the United States,” he declared. the failed 2012 Republican presidential candidate.
Romney has remained mostly moral in his criticism of the former president, making it clear that he will “absolutely not” vote for him in November.
“What America is as a nation, what has allowed us to be the most powerful nation on Earth and the leader on Earth is the character of the people who have been our leaders,” said the former Massachusetts governor earlier this year. “Former presidents, but also mothers, fathers, church leaders, university presidents, etc.
“Having such an unfulfilled president would have an enormous impact on the character of America,” he added. “And for me, that's the main consideration.”
Social media users seemed unimpressed with Romney's pontificating and called X his “mechanical” demeanor.
