Microsoft's head of AI, Mustafa Suleyman, has outlined his main goals for the tech giant. Suleyman, who co-founded DeepMind, now oversees key Microsoft teams including Bing, Edge and Copilot. In a recent podcast, he expressed his desire to improve the quality of Copilot, Microsoft's flagship AI product.
Suleyman joined Microsoft in March and has since been impressed by the company's scale and reach. He believes Microsoft's reputation in Silicon Valley needs re-evaluation. Despite being one of the most valuable companies in the world, Microsoft has been somewhat overshadowed by its old rival Google over the past decade.
Before Google acquired DeepMind, Suleyman co-founded it. He then spent two years at Google as vice president of product management and AI policy. After leaving Google in 2022, Suleyman co-founded Inflection AI, which was later acquired by Microsoft. He was later appointed CEO of Microsoft AI to lead the company's AI initiatives.
Suleyman's main goal at Microsoft is to improve the quality of Copilot. He said: “We're rapidly building some of the best models in the world, working very closely with OpenAI, building on top of all the OpenAI models and infrastructure, tuning their models.” He added that the next phase of AI assistants that Microsoft is targeting is focused on memory and personalization.
Microsoft's Copilot has been relatively well received by users, and the company has benefited from being quick to market with the product, beating rival Google's effort by several months. However, one of the main criticisms from Microsoft customers is that Copilot does not perform as well as OpenAI's ChatGPT. Microsoft has responded by saying that customers are not using the new tools properly and that it is paying a partner to produce videos to teach customers how to write better directions.
