Mexican authorities have busted 31 pharmacies near popular tourist destinations for selling fentanyl pills, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Authorities seized thousands of boxes of pills through operations near Tijuana, seconds in the LA Times. The US government issued a “health alert” in March to warn Americans not to shop at Mexican pharmacies over the possible sale of fentanyl-tainted pills.
“This action was carried out thanks to citizen complaints, being a precedent in the region that receives millions of tourists annually, so information on various health irregularities was received and analyzed,” explained the Mexican government. said in a statement.
A previous LA Times research revealed that several pharmacies in northwestern Mexico were selling pills advertised as Adderall, Xanax and Oxycodone that were laced with fentanyl. The Mexican authorities have been raid these pharmacies for months to try to suppress the problem.
“Be careful when buying medicine in Mexico. Pharmaceutical products, both over-the-counter and prescription in the United States, can often be easily purchased with little regulation. Counterfeit medicines are common and may be ineffective, have the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients. Medicines should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments,” the State Department warned in March.
