Former First Lady Melania Trump made a rare appearance on Friday, and it was in one of the last places you'd expect to see her.
Melania welcomed the new US citizens at a naturalization ceremony at the National Archives, an agency that figures prominently in one of the criminal cases facing Donald Trump.
As the only first lady who has also been a naturalized American citizen, Melania Trump spoke about the responsibilities that come with citizenship and the importance of “protecting our freedom.”

“How fortunate to be with naturalized people and their families as they recite the Pledge of Allegiance and become Americans before the founding documents of our great nation,” he told the audience before sharing memories of his journey from her place of birth in Slovenia until she became a United States citizen. .
“The path to citizenship is arduous,” Melania said. “I was born and raised in the picturesque country of Slovenia, where my parents taught me the importance of a strong work ethic and chasing my dreams.”
“The values instilled in me at an early age inspired my passion for my modeling career and led me to the beautiful cities of Paris and Milan,” she continued.
“Although working internationally had its share of rules and regulations, it wasn't until I moved to New York City in 1996 that the system really tested my resolve,” he recalled.
Melania said she knew “immediately” that she wanted to make the United States her permanent home and began the process of obtaining a work visa.
“Patience and perseverance became my constant companions as I navigated this intricate web” of documents, he said.
The challenges were “many,” he told the crowd, but the “rewards” were “well worth the effort.”
He then spoke of the “ideals surrounding individual liberty and this great Republic” found in the Declaration of Independence.
“Being an American citizen comes with responsibility,” he said. “It means actively participating in the democratic process and watching over our freedom. It also means leading by example and contributing to our society”.
“It's a life-changing experience that takes time, determination and sometimes even tremendous strength,” he added.
“You are an American,” he told the new citizens. “Be a beacon of inspiration to your children and those who follow in your footsteps.”
It was a beautiful speech, though, considering her husband's controversial relationship with the National Archives, some wondered why he agreed to hand it over.

According to the daily mailit boils down to the former first lady's “friendship with American archivist Colleen Shogan.”
It was Shogan who personally invited Melania to speak at the ceremony, a National Archives spokesman said.
“During Trump's time in the White House, Shogan worked alongside her and her East Wing staff on numerous projects in Shogan's roles with the Women's Suffrage Centennial Commission and the Association White House History,” reports DailyMail.com.
“Ironically, Shogan's swearing-in ceremony as archivist was attended by Jill Biden,” the outlet notes. “Shogan was appointed to the post of archivist by President Joe Biden in the summer of 2022, shortly after the FBI raided Donald Trump's home and seized thousands of pages of documents amid investigations into whether he took classified White House material after his presidency.”
