The STEM program at Stamford American School Hong Kong, known as “STEMinn” (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation), is taught under the guidance of 8 full-time expert teachers with an average of 10 years of experience . The unique STEMinn program in Stamford targets students from five years through graduation, fostering STEM skills that benefit all careers. Combining innovative projects and intentional curriculum planning, students develop critical thinking skills through the design thinking process adopted by globally successful companies such as Apple, Microsoft and Nike. “The Creative Designer” Mr. Ayesh De Alwis – Elementary STEMinn Coordinator, BA, PGCE

Mr. De Alwis began his career as a product designer before stumbling upon his passion for education. As the Elementary STEMinn Coordinator, she combines her love of all things STEM with her work experience in the field of design and technology to inspire young learners to embrace STEM in their elementary years. Under his guidance, students use the design thinking process to solve challenges such as living on Mars, worldwide flooding, products inspired by animal characteristics (biomimicry) and many more. To Mr. Alwis enjoys seeing students experience this passion for learning and STEM. It’s often found in Stamford’s 602-square-foot Elemental Innovation Center, which has been purpose-built and stocked with the latest in coding and robotics like VEXGO, VEX123, Dash and Bluebot, 3D printers, laser cutters and other hand tools. .
