New York City Mayor Eric Adams is currently under investigation for possible corruption and illegal campaign donations, a federal grand jury subpoena issued to him revealed. The subpoenas, which were also issued to the City Council and Adams' 2021 mayoral campaign committee in July, demand a range of materials, including text messages, communications and other documents. The development is part of an ongoing investigation into possible public corruption and foreign influence in the Adams campaign.
Fabien Levy, the mayor's chief spokesman, has reiterated Adams' position of innocence and his commitment to cooperate with the investigation. “The mayor has been clear over the past nine months that he will cooperate with any ongoing investigation. Nothing has changed,” Levy said. He also stressed that Adams expects everyone involved to cooperate in bringing the investigation to a swift conclusion.
This isn't the first time Adams has come under federal scrutiny. Last year, his electronic devices were seized by FBI agents under a court order. The investigation is believed to focus on campaign money, potential favors and foreign influence. The investigation became public knowledge after the home of Brianna Suggs, Adams' chief fundraiser, was raided by the FBI and investigators.
Despite the ongoing investigation, neither Adams nor Suggs have been formally charged with any wrongdoing. Brendan McGuire, the mayor's attorney, who is also representing the campaign, said Adams and the committee are cooperating with the investigation and responding to the recently issued subpoenas. McGuire also mentioned that his investigation has found no evidence of illegal conduct by the mayor.
Adams, currently serving his first term in office, is expected to face at least three challengers in the upcoming 2025 Democratic primary.
