HBO’s “Real Time” host Bill Maher argued Friday that public schools should try to be more like Catholic schools. The liberal comedian’s shock was rooted in his belief that public schools are producing violent and ignorant youth.
As evidence, Maher played a dozen relatively recent videos of public school kids attacking and even hitting their teachers.
“I’m sure there are parents who see this and say, that’s not us and that’s not our experience. It’s true that not all schools are violent and scary. But they’re all diploma mills that allow students to graduate- know without requiring children to know basic things,” he said at the time.
“George W. Bush [once] he asked, ‘Is it teaching our children?’ Well, it only got worse. Only 33 percent of American children can read at a proficient level. If you go to an American high school now, that’s about a third,” he added.

Continuing his rule, he admitted that he is no longer surprised by the current trend of education outside of public schools.
“So it’s no surprise to me that homeschooling is the fastest-growing form of education in America, and not just with weird Christian families who make their daughters wear bonnets. For millions of parents, anything is better now than public education, and that includes Catholic school,” he said.
“In 1970, only 2.7 percent of children in Catholic school were non-Catholic. Now it’s 22 percent. Catholic school eighth graders are two full grade levels above children from the public school, because their school is not a safe space to f–king off. They tell them no, you can’t be on the phone here and your pronouns are shut up and sit down. What the hell is this country that for get an education without bulls now, you have to go to the place that is based entirely on bulls?” he added.
As should be obvious, Maher is not an innate fan of Catholic schools. But he is a fan of the discipline and common sense they promote in the face of the inanity and insanity seen in modern public schools. With that in mind, what he would like to see in America are non-Catholic schools that behave like Catholic schools.
“What we need in this country is a chain of non-Catholic Catholic schools. And since many celebrities have opened their own schools…well, now I’m thinking of doing that and opening Bill Maher’s Catholic School. It’s like traditional Catholic school, without the religion and the abuse,” he joked.
“At Bill Maher Catholic School, we do old school with a curriculum called classical school. First rule: No phones all day, no exceptions, not only so the kids aren’t distracted when they’re trying to learn, but also because it forces hovering parents to leave their crap alone for eight hours. You are his father, not his probation officer,” he added.
“Other rules include: No inventing a distraction that allows your child to spend more time on the test, we call it by its original name, cheating. No participation tapes, no turning in anything late, no vaping, no emotional support animals and, of course, if a student does not maintain a C average or higher, absolutely no sex with the teacher,” he continued.
Maher’s remarks drew some criticism from those who say the left, as in his party of choice, is to blame for conditions in modern public schools:
And we keep moving bluer…that correlation is positive as most others fail in our once great country.

Most teachers in the US (and all over the west) are lefties and women and voted for it across the board and wanted it that way. They have to live with the consequences of their decisions.

Democrats have owned the DoE for decades. Democrats run the education system all the way from college courses to the classroom. They no longer train teachers to teach. They train them to be activists.

But by the same token, Maher’s words also inspired some agreement and praise.
Look at:
Great “New Rules”. These videos of school violence have been on Twitter for months. I’m glad I gathered some of them.

Bill Maher: One of the rare voices of reason and sanity on the left. I miss the days when I had common ground with liberals.

I have to agree with you on this one! Many teachers are not supported by administrators when they try to enforce the rules, especially if parents complain that they are on the parent’s side! Many schools are afraid to hold students accountable for misbehavior, disruptions, and even violence!

About the weather @billmaher people don’t know what’s going on in our schools. 500,000 teachers have left in the last 5 years or so. Behaviors are out of control and we are left to our own devices. Many more teachers will leave in the coming years. Thanks for pointing that out.
