In a recent episode of America's Got Talent, the judges and audience were blown away by 10-year-old Maya Neelakantan's performance. The young Indian started her set with a traditional song before moving into a rendition of Papa Roach's hit 'Last Resort' on her electric guitar.
After her performance, which earned a standing ovation from the audience and the four judges, Sofia Vergara asked incredulously, “Are you sure you're 10 years old?” He went on to praise Maya's energy and confidence, describing her audition as flawless and amazing.
When judge Howie Mandel asked who inspired her, Maya named Tool's Alex Jones and Exodus and Slayer guitarist Gary Holt. Mandel responded, “Well, I think you just picked up a viral moment.”
Heidi Klum added: “Everybody in this room loved what you just did. You should be so proud of yourself.” Simon Cowell also expressed his admiration for the young talent, saying: “You didn't expect this. You were so shy and 10 years old. And then you became like this rock goddess.”
In another surprising twist this season, Cowell made show history by hitting the coveted Golden Buzzer, which sends contestants straight to the live shows, twice in one episode. The first was for Chicago singer Liv Warfield after her lively performance with her band. He later pressed him again for a six-man group called the Sky Elements, who put on an impressive drone light show.
This unexpected move prompted questions from the production, his fellow judges and the audience. Despite the confusion, Cowell stood by his decision, stating: “It doesn't matter. I had to do it.” As a result, the rules for Season 19 were changed on the spot, allowing the judges two chances to press the Golden Buzzer for acts they believe deserve a spot in the live shows.
