A tragic mass shooting occurred Sunday morning in Akron, Ohio, leaving a 27-year-old man dead and 26 others injured, with at least one person in critical condition. Police have not yet identified a suspect, but have recovered a firearm and numerous bags from the crime scene. This incident was one of several shootings that occurred over the weekend across the country.
In a similar incident, two people were killed and seven were injured at the Ballers Hookah Lounge and Cigar Bar in Penn Hills, a suburb of Pittsburgh. Violence broke out after an altercation inside the bar, which led to several people opening fire.
A total of 29 gun violence deaths were reported on Saturday, according to the Gun Violence Archive. That included a police officer in Arizona, four victims of two separate incidents in Cleveland and Cincinnati, and two men in South Los Angeles. Despite these grim numbers, June 1 marked the lowest number of Saturday gun violence fatalities in six weeks.
The Gun Violence Archive defines mass shootings as incidents in which at least four people, excluding the shooter, are injured or killed. As of 2024, there has been a decrease in mass shootings, with 187 incidents reported so far, compared to 271 for the same date in 2023. This represents a 35% decrease in fatalities (220 this year compared to 341 last year) and a 27.6% decrease in injuries (776 this year compared to 1,073 last year).
Despite these declines, the number of gun deaths remains high. Florida has had the most mass shootings this year, with 16 incidents reported from January to June. However, Illinois has the highest death toll, with 25 victims. As of June 2, 2024, there have been a total of 6,964 gun-related deaths in the United States, including unintentional shootings and gun injuries.
