Marco Rubio shuts down CNN's Dana Bash on Trump's “revenge,” if elected

-

Sen. Marco Rubio shut down CNN anchor Dana Bash when asked if former President Donald Trump will go after his political opponents.

As President Joe Biden's fragility becomes uncomfortably obvious, the possibility of a second Trump term moves ever closer to reality. There is a prevailing conspiracy theory on the left, debunked by the former president himself, that Trump will use his power to attack his political opponents if he wins re-election in November.

Rubio was pressed on this during a segment on “The State of the Union with Jake Tapper and Dana Bash,” where he quickly dismissed the idea.

“I'm uncomfortable with the fact that now that we have a president who targets political opponents, that's what's happened under Joe Biden,” Rubio said. “When Donald Trump was president, I can't think of a single prominent Democrat who was hounded, hounded, prosecuted. It amuses me to read these people and hear these people warning about all the horrible things they ridiculously say Donald Trump will do if he comes back to to be president, they are the ones who have persecuted their political opponents. Donald Trump has been very clear that his revenge will be winning and making America great again, not persecuting his political opponents.”

“He said that in your debate, which you hosted,” he reminded Bash.

“There is no evidence that Joe Biden has gone after political opponents,” Bash interjected.

After more back and forth, the host pressed Rubio again.

“My question to you, as a Republican who might be on the ticket, is whether you're comfortable with the way the Supreme Court ruled, and frankly not just on January 6th and the potential of what Donald Trump could do with it. power, but any president in the future, Democrat or Republican,” he asked. “It's a great precedent what the Supreme Court said.”

“I think what the Supreme Court did was clarify what the law is, and that is, you can't go after presidents for official acts and there's a presumption of immunity for quasi-official acts or semi-official acts or exactly the terminology they used in that,” Rubio responded. “They were pretty clear about that, and I think it's unfortunate that we have to have this conversation in America today, but understand why this has become topical, why we need to talk about this issue now: because it's clear that we've come at a time when there are people in American politics who believe that our courts are now a weapon that can be used against their political opponents.”

“Look at their efforts and what they've done in the courts to go after and prosecute Donald Trump, they've tried to bankrupt him, they've tried to silence him, they've tried to imprison him, they've gone after his allies, every day.” , Rubio continued. “And some of these are ridiculous charges.”

“Senator Donald Trump has said he would go after Joe Biden, he would go after members of the Biden family,” Bash said. “That's never something we've heard Joe Biden say.”

“No he hasn't, I watched the debate, you guys did a great job, I watched it, and he was asked and he said my revenge would be to win and restore America, make America great again,” he point to the senator. “He didn't say I'm going to go after them and so on and I'm going to put them in jail.”

“Not in the debate, but he had said it elsewhere. Not in the debate, you're right, but he has said it elsewhere,” Bash admitted.

“He's said repeatedly that his revenge will be to make America great again, to undo all of his bad public policies, and by the way, he was president for four years and he didn't go after Hillary Clinton, he didn't go after Joe Biden, he didn't go after Barack Obama, he didn't go after any of his consultants, we didn't see under him what we're seeing now,” Rubio responded.

“You're telling me right now that a second Trump administration would not go after any Democrat, any of his political opponents, period. Do you have confidence that that's not going to happen?” Bash pushed again.

“Yeah,” Rubio said. “Before he was president and then he didn't. He already said he wouldn't. He'll be too busy undoing all the damage from this disastrous presidency.”
