Letitia James sues meatpacking company over accusations of misleading consumers with climate claims

Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat from New York, sued a meatpacking company on Wednesday, accusing it of misleading consumers about its effects on the environment, according to a news release from the office.

James accused the US division of JBS, a Brazil-based company with operations around the world, of lying when it promised to be carbon neutral by 2040. seconds in the press release. The attorney general stated that the company cannot meet this goal because of its involvement in beef production.

“JBS USA's greenwashing exploits the pockets of everyday Americans and the promise of a healthy planet for future generations,” James said in the statement.

James is seeking to compel the company to stop using “false and deceptive marketing practices” and “turn off all ill-gotten gains,” according to the press release. Penalties could cost a minimum of $5,000 per violation.

“JBS takes its commitment to a more sustainable future for agriculture very seriously. We disagree with the action taken today by the New York Attorney General's office,” said a spokesperson for the meatpacking company to the Daily Caller News Foundation. “JBS will continue to partner with farmers, ranchers and our food system partners around the world to help feed a growing population while using fewer resources and reducing the environmental impact of agriculture. Our belief that the 'American agriculture can help feed the world in a sustainable way is not discovered.'

James previously took legal action against high-profile political opponents in cases that saw sentences handed down in February.

James sued former President Donald Trump in September 2022, alleging that he exaggerated the value of real estate properties to obtain loans. Judge Arthur Engoron governed on Feb. 16 that Trump must pay $354 million and bar him from being an officer or director of any New York-based company or organization for three years.
