Former President Trump says he should have immunity, even when it comes to killing America's enemies while in office, or political opponents will try to prosecute him.
His claim was made in relation to the fact that the president was the commander-in-chief who commanded the military while in office, not that he would try to assassinate political opponents as the left claims. Trump ordered the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in 2020, who had conspired and killed American soldiers.
Almost every president who has been in office has been involved in military decisions that require lethal force when dealing with America's enemies. Stripping a former president of immunity would leave them open to political persecution once they leave office.
The media is spinning the comments as Trump specifically says he should be immune from prosecution for killing political opponents. A tactic leftists falsely tried to use against his lawyers earlier this week as they argued the former president had presidential immunity once he left office.

What Trump proposed is that he should have presidential immunity as other presidents have had before him.
“During arguments in a Washington, DC courtroom on Tuesday, Trump's lawyer, D. John Sauer, was asked whether, hypothetically, a president could order the assassination of a rival by the 'American military and be immune from any legal consequences.' The Independent reported
“Mr. Saur said prosecution would only be allowed after impeachment and a Senate conviction. He was then pressed by Judge Florence Pan, who said: “I asked you a yes or no question. Could a president who ordered SEAL Team 6 to assassinate a political rival … be subject to criminal prosecution? '”, it continued.
“Yes qualified, if he is charged and convicted first,” replied Sauer, who was referring to the constitutional procedure in the Senate and not to the assignment of guilt by left-wing political opponents for a blatant conspiracy theory.
“Given that you concede that presidents can be criminally prosecuted, under certain circumstances, that doesn't reduce the issues before us … can a president be prosecuted without first being charged and convicted?” Judge Florence Y. Pan, appointed by President Joe Biden to the court. said “[A]All your other arguments seem to fall away, your separation of powers arguments fall away, your political arguments fall away if you admit that a president can be prosecuted under some circumstances.”

Trump Notifies All Former Presidents of Statute of Limitations and If He Doesn't Have Immunity, None of Them Do
“By the way, the statute of limitations goes back 6 years, and sometimes more than that.”

The litigator defending the US government, Assistant Special Counsel James Pearce, said Sauer's response represented “an extraordinarily frightening future” because the premise could place presidents above the law.
Trump was asked Thursday whether he agreed with his lawyer's assessment or not.
“About immunity [it’s] very simple,” the former president responded at a news conference during his ongoing civil fraud trial in New York.
“If a president of the United States doesn't have immunity, he's going to be totally ineffective because he won't be able to do anything because it will mean he's going to be prosecuted, heavily prosecuted maybe, as soon as he leaves office by the opposing side. So a president of the United States, I'm not talking just from me, he has to have immunity,” Trump said.
Presidential candidate Nikki Haley took the opportunity to mock Trump over a legal defense of presidential immunity, calling it “ridiculous” during Wednesday night's Republican debate in Iowa.
“No, this is ridiculous. This is absolutely ridiculous,” Haley said according to The Independent. “You can't go kill a political rival and then claim, you know, the immunity of a president. I think we have to start doing the right things.”
Again, that's not what Trump or his lawyer said.
