Kimberly Cheatle RESIGNS, but she's not out of the woods yet

A day after an evasive appearance before the House Oversight Committee, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle fought back has resigned — a decision that shouldn't have taken so long. Again, if there had been strong leadership in the White House, Cheatle would never have had the opportunity to make the decision.

Cheatle has come under intense pressure since the failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, where 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks was inexplicably able to gain access to a roof less than 150 meters from where Trump was speaking in a demonstration. Rifle in hand, Crooks had a clear line of sight, and despite being seen by snipers, he was able to get off a series of shots, hitting the former president in the head. Three attendees were also hit, and one of the three, Corey Comperatore, was killed as he heroically tried to protect his wife and two daughters.

“I take full responsibility for the security failure,” Cheatle said in an email to staff, according to the Associate Press. “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as director.”

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) shared a video statement in response to Cheatle's resignation, adding in the caption: “Director Cheatle answered our calls to resign. Well. Now our group of Labor will quickly and thoroughly investigate the attempted assassination of President Trump and hold those responsible accountable.”

A message purportedly from President Biden offered effusive praise for the disgraced director, who was an acquaintance of first lady Jill Biden:

“Jill and I are grateful to Director Kim Cheatle for her decades of public service. She has selflessly dedicated herself and risked her life to protect our nation throughout her career with the United States Secret Service. We thank her especially for answering the call to lead the Secret Service during our Administration and we appreciate your service to our family.

“The independent review to get to the bottom of what happened on July 13 continues, and I look forward to assessing its findings. We all know that what happened that day can never happen again. As we move forward, I wish Kim all the best and plan to appoint a new director soon.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis posted on X: “She should have resigned immediately after the shooting. Biden should have fired her anyway. After her disastrous testimony, she had no choice but this is just the beginning of what must be a broad responsibility for the agency.”

U.S. Rep. Marjorie Tylor Greene (R-GA), asked the director directly on Monday: “Was there a takedown order, Ms. Cheatle? Was there a conspiracy to kill President Trump?!”

Greene responded to the resignation by suggesting that Cheatle might not have signed off yet.

“On her last day on the job at @GOPoversight, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle participated in the cover-up of President Trump's assassination attempt,” the GOP lawmaker posted on X. “Cheatle has resigned, but he may face criminal investigations for his role on 7/13 and his response in the days that followed.”

Here's a sampling of responses to X's story, including a comment from former Sen. Jim DeMint calling for Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who oversees the Secret Service, to also resign:
