The 2025 Formula 1 grid is slowly taking shape, with important decisions being made ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix. Red Bull recently confirmed their commitment to Sergio Perez by offering the Mexican driver a new deal, while sister team RB extended Yuki Tsunoda's contract for another year. However, eight 2025 seats remain unfilled, and official announcements are expected soon.
The driver market was set on fire in February when Lewis Hamilton announced his move from Mercedes to Ferrari, sparking interest in the future of Carlos Sainz, the driver he replaces. Sainz was linked with Mercedes and Red Bull, but those options appear to have faded despite his strong performance. He now faces two less attractive prospects: a move to Sauber, which will become Audi's works team in 2026, or an offer from Williams to drive alongside Alex Albon.
Sainz's status as a top free agent driver means Sauber and Williams are willing to wait for his final decision. Valtteri Bottas, currently with Sauber, is keeping a close eye on Sainz's situation as his hopes of staying in F1 depend on either his current team or Williams.
Mercedes appear to be leaning towards Andrea teenager Kimi Antonelli, who has impressed over the past few days of testing. Despite his modest impact during his debut Formula 2 campaign, Mercedes believes his talent warrants a fast track to F1.
Alpine and Haas are the only two teams still without confirmed drivers for 2025. Alpine and Esteban Ocon have agreed to part ways at the end of the season, while Pierre Gasly is hoping for a better option than staying with the d 'Enstone in difficulties. Haas is expected to sign Ocon and British teenager Oliver Bearman.
The other seat still up for grabs is next to Tsunoda in RB, currently held by Daniel Ricciardo. Despite early season struggles, Ricciardo has shown recent signs of improvement. However, he must at least match Tsunoda's performance for the rest of the season to secure his spot.
Red Bull boss Christian Horner revealed Perez's two-year extension is a “one plus one” deal. Perez, who has expressed his desire to finish his F1 career with Red Bull, needs to improve his form to fulfill his newly signed contract.
