Reporter Katie Couric questioned former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi about the lack of transparency about President Joe Biden's mental fitness during his 2024 re-election bid in an interview on Tuesday.
Pelosi he wrote in his new book that former President Donald Trump's family should have “interventioned” with him about how he handled his loss in the 2020 presidential election. Couric on her YouTube channelsuggested that Biden's family should have held an intervention with the president about his “physical endurance,” sparking a confrontation where the reporter pressed the former House speaker to shield concerns about his fitness from the public mental

“With all due respect, Speaker Pelosi, when I read this, I asked myself, couldn't the same be said for President Biden? People should have determined earlier that he might not have the physical stamina to endure a re-election campaign and put the Democratic Party in a better position for this election?” Couric asked.
“Well, with all due respect, again, you're making an equivalence here that doesn't exist. If you think there's resistance to run again and serve four years it's a very different thing if you're undermining our democracy in office.” Pelosi said. “And that's what Donald Trump was doing. It was about his damage to the country and the instability he brought to it, and the unpatriotic attitude he had. It wasn't about whether he was healthy enough to do this or that for physical health. It was what happened in his distortion of the facts. Two completely different situations… If it's just a question of whether someone has the stamina [serve] for four years, we have dealt with this. They haven't.”
Couric asked Pelosi whether “there should have been more transparency,” regardless of the differences in circumstances between presidents and their families, and Pelosi responded by repeating twice that “they are not equivalent.”
“But that doesn't answer the question of whether there should have been more transparency,” Couric said. “Would President Biden be too sheltered and out of the public eye for too long, and that puts the Democratic Party at a disadvantage, given that the election is less than 100 days away?”
Pelosi repeated twice that Biden “is not the candidate.”
“Should it have been dealt with earlier?” Couric asked.
The former speaker of the House touted what she saw as a “successful NATO summit” that Biden hosted, where he suffocated some worries about his political future as he makes some crucial gaffes at a press conference in July to wrap up the summit. He also said that Biden gave a “virtuous performance” in the prisoner exchange where Russia freed the Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan in exchange for one russian killer.
“It was masterful. So it has been working A+. Whether he would do it for four more years is a different story,” Pelosi said. “But in the present, we lost nothing with his service, while with this other guy, we were curtailing and diminishing our democracy and our freedoms diminished… I don't think that's the equivalent of someone saying that someone didn't. it goes well in the debate, and whatever the family decisions are.”
