Kamala Harris nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate for 2024

In a recent turn of events, Vice President Kamala Harris has been formally nominated as the Democratic Party's presidential nominee for 2024. This event comes shortly after President Biden announced the end of his re-election campaign and endorsed his Vice President for succeed him The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has conducted electronic voting for its party's 2024 flagship, which concludes on Monday, two weeks before the start of the party's convention at the United Center in Chicago.

Unlike Republicans who held their in-person convocation during their convention in Milwaukee last month, the DNC opted for a virtual convocation. There was no suspense in the nomination, as Vice President Harris was the only candidate to qualify before the deadline to have her name on the roll.

Questions about President Biden's physical and mental abilities to serve four more years in the White House were fueled by his performance against Trump in a late June debate in Atlanta. That prompted a growing chorus of calls from within his own party for the 81-year-old president to end his run for a second term.

Biden's immediate endorsement of Harris led to a surge of endorsements for the vice president from Democratic governors, senators, members of the House and other party leaders. Within 36 hours, Harris announced that he had secured his party's nomination by garnering the verbal support of a majority of the convention's nearly 4,700 delegates.

The DNC decided to hold a virtual call, similar to what they did four years ago to nominate Biden amid the coronavirus pandemic, to formally have a candidate at the top of their ticket before the ballot access deadline of August 7 in Ohio.

The DNC reported that 3,923 delegates requested to put Harris on the ballot for the Democratic nomination, and that no other candidate met the party's threshold of 300 delegate signatures to qualify for the ballot. While official delegate nomination voting is done remotely, the DNC says a ceremonial roll call will be held at the Chicago convention.

With Harris' nomination confirmed, speculation has run wild over the past week about who the vice president will choose as his running mate. The Harris campaign announced that the vice president and her soon-to-be-named running mate will embark on a swing through seven key battleground states starting Tuesday in Pennsylvania. The announcement of the running mate could come until Monday evening, after the end of the virtual call.
