In a rare political endorsement, retired former 10-time NBA point guard John Stockton has announced his support for Democratic-turned-independent 2024 candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
Stockton, who played for the Utah Jazz for nearly two decades, says Kennedy’s candidacy presents a unique opportunity to support a unifying platform and message at the presidential level.
“It’s a rare opportunity to have a candidate like him available in the first place, but it’s never been more important,” Stockton said. “I mean, we’re more divided than ever. We’ve been more distrustful of government than ever before. We’ve had more things shoved down our throats that aren’t even legal than maybe ever in the history of our country.”
Instead, Stockton said, Kennedy is a “warrior in every category” who fights for personal freedoms and is usually the “smartest person in the room.”
He said that every time he watches Kennedy on the stump, he seems more and more “presidential” and connected to the topics he talks about and the people he interacts with.
“If you ever get a chance to hear him speak, I highly recommend it, because you can be a doubter, and then you hear him speak and you’re like, ‘Wow, there’s something to this guy,'” Stockton said .
Stockton noted that he usually keeps his political views to himself despite his athletic celebrity, but said Kennedy deserves his nod.
“I’ve always tried to keep my vote private, and I probably try to keep it fairly balanced historically, but again, this is a rare opportunity.”
Host Jesse Watters also highlighted recent polls showing Kennedy getting votes from both President Biden and former President Donald Trump, including a Harvard-Harris poll showing Trump at 44 percent, Biden at 36 percent and Kennedy at 21 %.
