On August 13th, 2020, former President Jimmy Carter announced that he had entered hospice care. The announcement came after a recent announcement that he had been diagnosed with advanced melanoma, or skin cancer.
Carter, who is 95 years old, has been a public figure for the majority of his life, first serving in the United States Navy in the 1940s, then as Governor of Georgia from 1971-1975, and then as President of the United States from 1977-1981. Since then, he has been a leader in humanitarian efforts, and has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work in the advancement of human rights.
In a statement released on August 13th, Carter said “I have enjoyed a full life and I am ready for the next chapter.” He also thanked the many people who have been part of his life, and asked for prayers for his family and friends.
The news of Carter’s illness has prompted an outpouring of support from both political parties, as well as from around the world. President Trump said in a tweet that Carter was a “truly great man” and that he and his wife Melania are “keeping him and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”
Carter’s family has asked for privacy during this difficult time. In a statement, they said “We are comforted by the many expressions of love and support that we have received from all over the world.”
Carter’s legacy will undoubtedly live on for many years to come. His commitment to human rights and peace will be remembered by future generations. As we pray for his family during this difficult time, we can also take comfort in the fact that he has lived a long and meaningful life.
