Jim Jordan grills the Secret Service director, who has few answers: Comer asks him to resign

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) grilled Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle when she appeared before Congress to respond to the epic failures to protect former President Donald Trump.

The embattled director testified under subpoena before the House Oversight Committee on Monday, acknowledging the failures of the July 13 assassination attempt against Trump but offering few solid answers.

“So what is it? Were you guessing or lying when you said you didn't turn down President Trump's requests for details? Jordan asked Cheatle, referring to conflicting reports about Trump's team asking for increased security ahead of the Pennsylvania rally but being denied.

“For the event at Butler there were no denied applications,” Cheatle replied.

“They asked for additional help in one form or another. You told them no. How many times did you tell them no? And what did you tell them no to?” Jordan asked, citing remarks from Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

“What I can tell you is that in general terms, when people make a request when there are details, there are times when there are alternative ways to cover that threat or that report,” Cheatle responded, avoiding a direct answer. .

“Looks like you're not going to answer some pretty basic questions, looks like you got a 9% raise and looks like you've cut corners when it comes to protecting one of the most famous people on the planet. Is that right?” Jordan demanded.

“I'm here today because I want to answer questions,” Cheatle replied.

Rep. James Comer opened the hearing Monday, saying the assassination attempt was “one of the darkest days in American political history” and that it was his “firm belief” that Cheatle should resign.

“Today's witness, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, is here under subpoena to answer questions about how the agency failed President Trump and the victims who attended the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania,” said the chairman of the House Oversight Committee in his opening statement.

“I strongly believe, Director Cheatle, that you should resign. However, in total defiance, Director Cheatle has maintained that she will not be resigning,” Comer continued. “So today he will answer questions from members of this committee who seek to bring clarity to the American people about how these events were allowed to unfold.”

Cheatle did not give Comer a definitive answer on whether the Secret Service had an agent on the roof where the shooter ultimately opened fire on Trump and the attendees.

“Can you answer why the Secret Service didn't place a single agent on the roof?” Comer asked.

“We're still looking at the go-ahead process and the decisions that were made,” he replied, prompting Comer to ask if the building was “within the perimeter that should be secured? Do we agree with that?” “

“The building was outside the perimeter on the day of the visit, but again that's one of the things we want to look at during the investigation,” Cheatle replied.

During his testimony, Cheatle stated, “I think I'm the best person to run the Secret Service at this time.”

Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna (CA) also attacked Cheatle, reminding him of the head of the Secret Service during the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.
