During the Lunar New Year celebration, the president reflected on the wave of violence the Asian American community has faced in recent months while standing in the East Room of the White House.

“As I have said many times before, hate can have no refuge or safe harbor in America. No person deserves to be treated with hate, in a hateful way. All deserve to be treated with dignity and respect,” Biden proclaimed. during his statements at the party.

His comments came in the shadow of a shooting in Monterey Park, California, a predominantly Asian American city, over the weekend that left 11 dead. At the moment, there are no indications that the attack was racially motivated.

Near the conclusion of the dragon dance performance to celebrate the Lunar New Year, the first lady also teased her husband, saying the dance could ruin the night before closing the festivities.

“Come on Joe! No, you’re not going to dance,” he quipped after the president hinted that he might dance. “Trust me, you don’t want to ruin the evening.”
