Jewish high school takes stand against anti-Semitism and requires college recruiters to have security plans

In the wake of a disturbing rise in anti-Semitism across the country, a Jewish high school is taking a bold stand to ensure the safety of its students. Rabbi Joshua Kahn, the head of the Bergen County Torah Academy in Teaneck, New Jersey, has made it clear that college recruiters are not welcome on campus unless their respective universities have a comprehensive campus security plan .

Rabbi Kahn emphasizes that this initiative is not politically motivated, but a fundamental commitment to the safety of its students. He says: “We are looking for a process whereby colleges articulate a commitment from the highest levels, from their school administration to protect our students, as well as an action plan.” This approach is rooted in the belief that safety is a universal concern and a prerequisite for a valuable education.

The rabbi also emphasized the importance of education in defending freedom, expressing his concern about the threats facing higher education institutions. It reminded us of the upcoming 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass when Jews across Europe were attacked. He said: “We need to be able to act to ensure that ‘never again’ is a very real point of action, not just a slogan.”

This proactive stance comes in the wake of recent threats against Jewish students at Cornell University. One student, 21-year-old Patrick Dai, has been charged federally with those threats. Dai allegedly posted threats to attack a multicultural dining hall on campus and called for the death of Jews.

Rabbi Kahn acknowledged that this new rule to ensure student safety was not something they had originally planned, but is now considered essential in light of growing anti-Semitism on campuses across the country. He concluded, “We see our students as our children, and we need to know that we’re going to send them to safe places, places that will take care of them.”
