A federal jury in Sioux City has convicted Kim Phuong Taylor, the wife of an Iowa county supervisor, of 52 counts of voter fraud.
Prosecutors say Taylor, a native of Vietnam, approached numerous voters of Vietnamese descent who had a limited understanding of English and filled out and signed election forms and ballots on behalf of them and their English-speaking children .
The shocking scheme was an attempt to help her husband, Jeremy Taylor, secure the Republican nomination to run for Congress in 2020. Taylor ultimately lost the primary, but was elected to the County Board of Supervisors of Woodbury that fall.
The evidence against Taylor was overwhelming. Prosecutors produced dozens of voter registrations, absentee ballot request forms and absentee ballots that contained false information that Taylor had submitted or had others submit.
Kim Phuong Taylor faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison on each charge. His sentencing is scheduled for May 12.
This case is a stark reminder that electoral fraud is a serious crime. Despite what you may hear from some politicians and pundits, electoral fraud is not widespread. But when it occurs, it undermines the integrity of our elections and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
