IOC reverses gymnastics bronze medal decision, Romanian Ana Barbosu to receive medal

-

In a surprise twist, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that the bronze medal initially awarded to American gymnast Jordan Chiles for the floor exercise at the Paris Games will now be awarded to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu. This decision follows a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which stated that the initial US investigation into Chile's score was filed after the stipulated one-minute deadline.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has confirmed that Chile's original score of 13.666 will be reinstated, and Barbosu's score of 13.700 will be improved to third place. Consequently, Chiles will be stripped of her bronze medal, which will be reassigned to Barbosu.

The IOC is currently in discussions with the National Olympic Committee of Romania regarding the reassignment ceremony and with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) regarding the return of the bronze medal.

The USOPC, however, has expressed disagreement with the decision and plans to appeal. They believe that Chiles rightly won the bronze medal and that there were critical errors in the initial FIG scoring and the CAS appeal process. The USOPC claims they were not given sufficient time or notice to effectively challenge the decision, resulting in them not being adequately represented or able to present their case comprehensively.

The competition ended in dramatic fashion, with Barbosu initially believing she had won the bronze medal after achieving a score of 13.700. Chiles had originally posted a score of 13.666, but her coaches successfully challenged the difficulty score, which added 0.1 to her score and moved her up to third place.

However, the TAS ruled that the query submitted on behalf of Chiles was raised after the end of the one-minute period stipulated in the regulation, calling into question Chiles' medal. After the sentencing, Chiles announced on his Instagram story that he would be taking a break from social media for his mental health.
