This morning, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) informed CNN that a global cyberattack has targeted several US federal government agencies. The repercussions of the hack, the number of agencies affected, and even who carried out the attack, are not yet publicly known at the time of writing.
According to CISA’s deputy executive director for cybersecurity, Eric Goldstein, the agency is currently “supporting multiple federal agencies that have experienced intrusions” and is “urgently working to understand the impacts and ensure timely remediation.” CISA has not yet confirmed who is responsible for the breaches, or whether the agency knows itself. This after an announcement by certain hacker groups that they were targeting European banks that would collapse within 48 hours.
Biden, when asked by a reporter about today’s cyber attack on federal agencies, declined to comment.
Various media reported On Wednesday evening and Thursday three notorious hacktivist groups, KillNet, Anonymous Sudan and REvil, declared a cyberwar in the West against member banks of the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT). Russia was kicked out of the SWIFT system last year after its invasion of Ukraine as part of a series of economic sanctions that have largely been against the West.
The three hacker groups declared their intention to launch a massive cyber attack on the European banking system, threatening to bring it to its knees within “48 hours” (this threat as made Wednesday afternoon), on Russian online newspaper. Slow.ru reported Wednesday. Hacker groups say it will be a devastating cyberattack that shuts down the flow of money that funds military aid to Ukraine. (Source.)
Meanwhile, Presidents Vladimir Putin and his close ally Alexander Lukashenko this week addressed “the worst-case scenario that could come out of the war in Ukraine” as Russia deploys nuclear weapons in Belarus.

Separately, President Putin in the middle of this week expressed something similar, saying that a nightmare scenario is that “The fire of war will envelop all of Europe.”
According to new statements from the Russian leader reported by foreign war correspondent and geopolitical analyst Pepe Escobar [emphasis ZH]…
“We were forced to try to end the war that the West started in 2014 by force of arms. And Russia will end this war by force of arms, liberating the entire territory of former Ukraine from the United States and the Ukrainian Nazis. There are no other options,” Putin said.
“The US and NATO Ukrainian military will be defeated, regardless of the new type of weapons it receives from the West.. The more guns there are, the fewer Ukrainians will be left and what Ukraine used to be.”
And, above all, he emphasized that “The direct intervention of NATO’s European armies will not change the result. But in this case, the fire of war will envelop all of Europe. Looks like the US is ready for it too.”
Putin strongly suggested that Russia is also “prepared” for this worst outcome if the situation breaks down further. While Ukraine has so far received many dozens of main battle tanks from the West, some of which have already been destroyed on the battlefield by Russia’s superior weapon mix, the biggest escalation is believed to come with the eventual supply of F-16 fighters. jets (Full article.)
