How Alcoholism May Have Saved Western Europe

I recently created a YouTube channel for History on fire. In addition to posting some old HOF episodes (audio only), I'm creating original content by mixing historical footage related to each video's theme with shots of my amazingly cute talking (heat goggles are strongly recommended so your eyes don't melt) . As a result, creating, recording, and editing these types of videos takes an ungodly amount of time, so I'm focusing on topics that are small enough that I can cover them in a few minutes.

So far, I have posted the following:

The drinking misadventures of Alexander the Great: whenever Alexander got a little drunk, cities burned or people died. This is just a warm-up for the day he sponsored the deadliest drinking game in history.

The story of Gonzalo Guerrero: in this real-life version of Dances with Wolvesa castaway is adopted by a group of Mayans in 1511. When Cortez appears to rescue him, Gonzalo is covered in tribal tattoos, married to a Mayan woman, and is the father of the former. mestizos in Mexican history, and has no intention of returning to Spain.

Killers of the Flower Moon: This is a brief overview of the story I covered in episode 101 History on fire (which is also the subject of Martin Scorsese's film on the subject.

Today I added one more video to this collection. The story of How Alcoholism May Have Saved Western Europe. By the 1240s, the Mongol army seemed unstoppable and well on its way to conquering all of Europe. In this quick video, explore how alcohol may have been the key ingredient that prevented the conquest.

If you like these videos (or even if you think they're offensive but are still generous enough to throw me a bone), it would be sweet if you could subscribe to the YouTube channel for free.

Have a nice day!
