A fire broke out today at Notre Dame Cathedral in the northern French city of Rouen, prompting the evacuation of the historic place of worship. The main spire of the cathedral was surrounded by thick black smoke, where renovation work was taking place.

The emergency services and 33 fire brigades, with 63 firefighters, arrived at the scene. The cause of the fire is currently unknown and the area has been cordoned off, which has caused disruptions to public transport in the city.

The mayor of Rouen took to X (Twitter) to inform people of the current situation.

“Start of ongoing fire in the spire of Rouen Cathedral. Origin unknown at this stage. All public resources are mobilized. Thank you for facilitating your intervention.” – Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol (Translated from French by Google)

Consecrated in 1062, Rouen Cathedral has been undergoing restoration since 2017. Famous for its three towers, the cathedral is a favorite subject of Claude Monet's Impressionist paintings. The central tower, which was alight during the fire, was also the main focus of Monet's artwork.
