Here's how GOP candidates are braving subzero temperatures for crucial Iowa caucuses

Forget the border crisis, foreign wars and the US economy: the big issue heading into Monday's Iowa caucuses is the climate.

“Life-threatening wind chills are expected Saturday night into early next week,” IowaWeather.com reported Thursday. “A wind chill watch is in effect for much of Iowa. This watch will be in effect Saturday evening through Tuesday morning as wind chills of 30 to 45 below zero are possible.”

“A wind chill advisory will be in effect Friday evening through midday Tuesday for parts of western Iowa, with wind chills as low as 45 below zero possible,” the weather network added in line

As the weekend approached, a blizzard warning went into effect for all of central Iowa.

Blaze TV's Steve Deace hosts his popular Iowa show. Something of an expert on the Iowa caucuses, Deace has been keeping an eye on the weather.

“Des Moines drops to minus-13; Cedar Rapids down to -14; Sioux City down to minus-14,” he reported Tuesday. “Yes, those are air temperatures.”

“Just had to go out to rescue a bunny stuck on my way out,” the conservative host wrote Friday on X. “One of the worst weather conditions I've ever experienced. Painful to breathe. Check your Caucus turnout projections from Iowa!

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis vowed Friday that he won't let frigid temperatures dampen his efforts in Iowa.

“I'll take anything they throw at me – nothing is handed to you in life,” he declared to X. “So if we have to walk through the snow to win the vote, we'll walk through the snow!”

When Mother Nature forced candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to cancel one of his campaign events, he personally called everyone who responded.

On Saturday morning, Ramaswamy announced a full day of scheduled events.

“George Washington fought the weather to cross the Delaware,” he wrote to X. “Another snow day in Iowa, another eventful day for us. The first event starts in 1 hour. We will continue until the 'last for as long as we can *physically* do it.”

On Thursday, Nikki Haley urged her supporters in Cedar Rapids to show up on Monday.

“Don't complain about what happens in the general election if you don't play in this caucus,” he warned. “It matters.”

South Carolina state Sen. Tom Davis wasn't about to let the weather stop him from coming to Iowa to support his former governor.

“All flights to Des Moines were canceled today due to a snow storm. After weighing my options, I decided to rent a car at the Charlotte airport and drive the 818 miles,” he told X. “I will not stop campaigning for[Nikki Haley]in the snow.”

“Team Haley is full!” Haley exclaimed in response as she wished the senator a safe trip.

And, on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump posted a video message Friday “TO THE GREAT PEOPLE OF IOWA.”

“Hey Iowa, this is your favorite president,” he began, “and we're going to make America great again.”

“I'm leaving very soon for your beautiful state. I love this state. I love the people of the state,” the GOP leader said. “I'll get there around Saturday night, or something like that.”

“One way or another, I'm getting there,” Trump promised. “You have the worst weather, I guess, in recorded history, but maybe that's a good thing, because our people are more engaged than anyone else, so maybe that's actually a good thing for us.”

“But we have to make sure that on Monday, at 6:30, we arrive half an hour before the 7 o'clock bell,” he told his supporters. “And we're going to do something really special. We will start with you, and then we will go around our country, and it will be incredible”.
