He pleaded guilty in an FBI-linked murder plot on January 6

-

Facing a possible life sentence, a Tennessee man reached a plea deal alleging he participated in a conspiracy to kill FBI agents with a co-defendant on Jan. 6.

Austin Carter, 26, of Knoxville, entered a guilty plea Tuesday to one count of conspiracy to murder U.S. employees that could see him face “a sentence of not more than 120 months in prison” after pointing the finger. to his co-defendant, 33-year-old Edward Kelley.

Carter’s filing stated that in December 2022, around the time of his arrest, the “defendant unlawfully and knowingly combined, conspired and agreed with his co-defendant, EDWARD KELLEY, to murder employees of the Federal Bureau of Investigation… while these employees were engaged in and because of the performance of official duties”.

In accordance with NBC newsCarter was a member of the Army Reserves at the time of his arrest, following Kelley’s initial arrest related to the U.S. Capitol breach on January 6, 2022. The filing alleged that Carter “and a cooperating witness (“CW”) discussed gathering information and plans to kill FBI employees.”

A separate document from December had claimed that Kelley provided a list of approximately 37 law enforcement officials who were connected to his J6 case. From there, Carter’s plea agreements said those names were passed on to the CW, who were told to memorize them and destroy the list. Thereafter, the co-defendants allegedly “discussed plans to attack the FBI field office in Knoxville, Tennessee.”

“The defendant pleads guilty because the defendant is in fact guilty,” Tuesday’s filing stated while Kelley himself had entered a not guilty plea in January.

Carter’s plea deal, which the government can accept or reject, came as Kelley awaits his own trial related to his Jan. 6 actions. NBC News detailed that “Video from the Jan. 6 riots shows a man identified as Kelley using a piece of wood to break a window, jump out the window, and then open a fire escape, allowing other rioters inside of the Capitol”.

Although his Jan. 6 state conference in his case is scheduled to take place in December, his federal jury trial for conspiracy to murder is expected to begin in January 2024.

The filing did not detail how the co-defendants intended to carry out the alleged plot to kill so many federal employees.

However, a supplementary note filed at the time of Carter’s arrest indicated that he possessed “firearms, and his wife confirmed this during her testimony, although they were secured with an unnamed person in another city four hours away and half distance. Finally, the defendant has worked for four different security companies and is a member of the Army Reserves, where he received advanced training. Although the defendant’s innocence is presumed, the complaints show the willingness to take violent actions against others, and it appears that the defendant has the training and potential access to the equipment (firearms) to do so. The weight of the evidence of the dangerousness of the accused is therefore significant”.
