The once-strong coalition that includes government agencies and tech platforms, which worked together to censor perceived misinformation, is reeling from its dissolution after years of sustained pushback from Republicans and recent court rulings, NBC reported Friday. News.
Republicans began publicly criticizing this coalition’s efforts during the 2020 election when social media users experienced censorship, seconds on NBC. The speech eventually led to legal efforts and government investigations, which have now successfully stopped almost all collaboration between the government and social media companies, to the point where they allegedly need pre-emptive approval from lawyers.
Two U.S. tech platforms, once accustomed to frequent briefings by the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, have not heard from the bureau in months, employees told NBC. Also, any engagement between the FBI and the platforms must receive prior approval and oversight from Justice Department lawyers, people familiar with the situation told NBC.

“We’re having some interaction with social media companies,” Wray said. “But all of these interactions have fundamentally changed as a result of the court rulings.”
A federal judge and one court of appeals found that certain government agencies and officials should be prohibited from coordinating with social media platforms to censor posts. The Supreme Court stayed the court order blocking those efforts, but has agreed to take the case.

I guess bots don’t have constitutionally protected speech. American citizens do.”
“If you’re the one raising the alarm about foreign interference or something that disenfranchises people and reports on the platforms, but it could cost you your job or your safety and security, you think twice Jankowicz said. , according to NBC.
The DHS’ Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has also ceased coordination with social media platforms, a current CISA employee told NBC.
“Some of these efforts are really designed to isolate people and make them feel like they can’t communicate with CISA, like they can’t communicate with their colleagues in other states,” a person employed at the state electoral administration. “People feel that things are very, very loaded, and common sense does not rule today.”
CISA Director Jen Easterly withdrew from social media after conservative criticism, two people familiar with CISA told NBC. “At this point, I don’t think the risk of dealing with social media platforms is worth any benefit, frankly,” Easterly said, according to NBC. “I made the decision not to. So we’re not doing that. Local election officials can give it on the same platforms, and I think that’s the right place to be.”
