Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) suggested Sunday that Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley should be “hanged” for his response to the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the Capitol.
In a Sunday newsletter, Gosar offered his thoughts on former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund’s testimony to the House Administration Committee last week. Gosar said Sund, who was the chief at the time of the attacks, had called for help from the National Guard, but claimed Milley “delayed.”
“But even after approval was given, Gen. Milley, the pro-gay BLM activist and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, delayed,” Gosar wrote. “Of course, we now know that the crooked Milley was coordinating with Nancy Pelosi to hurt President Trump and was treacherously working behind Trump’s back.”
“In a better society, quislings like the strange General Milley, who promotes sodomy, would be hanged,” he added, also calling Milley a “traitor.”
Gosar’s comments follow former President Trump’s post about Milley last week, in which he accused the top general of going behind his back to talk to his Chinese counterparts, an apparent reference to calls Milley made to reassure China toward the end of Trump’s tenure.
“This is such an egregious act that, in the past, the punishment would have been DEATH! A war between China and the United States could have resulted from this treasonous act,” Trump wrote.
The retired lieutenant. January manners by Mark Hertling CNN that the violent rhetoric de Gosar and Trump toward Milley is “disgusting.”
“This violence proposed by any political figure is disgusting, it shows how deeply disturbed both people are,” Hertling said.
“[Gosar’s] The statement given to the press was sexist, racist, vile; it just shows how commonplace and uncondemned this sort of thing has become in our divided country,” he added.
This is not the first time Gosar has publicly suggested violence against US officials. In 2021, the House voted for censure the Arizona Republican for posting an anime video depicting him violently attacking Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and President Biden.
The Hill has reached out to the joint chiefs for comment.
