From blindness to triumph, winning gold at the Invictus Games

In 2009, Wali Noori, an interpreter for the British Army in Afghanistan, lost his sight after stepping on an explosive device. Despite this life-changing incident, Noori's resilience and determination have led her to remarkable achievements, including winning four gold medals at the Invictus Games.

Growing up in Kabul, Noori was an avid runner and a proficient boxer. At 18, he joined the British Army as a translator and cultural advisor to support his large family. Their role was crucial in facilitating communication between the British Army, Afghan forces and local civilians. His life took a drastic turn when he stepped on an IED while on patrol, resulting in serious injuries and total blindness.

After the incident, Noori faced numerous challenges, including a two-week coma and a long recovery period. He was treated in several hospitals in Afghanistan, India and Pakistan. Despite his efforts, he could not regain his sight. Returning to Afghanistan, he felt his career days were over and feared for his future.

However, in 2012, Noori's life took a positive turn when she got married. His wife became his biggest supporter, encouraging him to overcome his challenges. The couple now have three children. In 2014, the British government allowed Noori and his family to move to the UK, a decision he says has changed their lives for the better.

In the UK, Noori discovered Guide Runners and rekindled her passion for running. This not only improved his mental health but also led him to compete at the Invictus Games in 2019, where he won four gold medals. He also had the opportunity to meet Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which he describes as an incredible moment in his life.

Noori, who has won a total of 21 running and three swimming medals, is aiming to compete in the Paralympics and complete all six major marathons. He has also written a book about his life, which will be published on the 15th anniversary of his blindness. Despite her disability, Noori continues to inspire others by sharing her story and supporting widows and orphans in Afghanistan. His story is a testament to his unwavering spirit and his determination to never give up on his blindness.
