
The family of former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has suffered a devastating loss.
The businesswoman's son, Marco Troper, was discovered dead at the University of California, Berkeley, on February 13. He was nineteen years old.
A university spokeswoman told NBC News that a student living in a student housing complex was discovered unconscious that day and that first responders with the Berkeley Fire Department performed life-saving efforts before declaring- the dead There were no signs of foul play, and the death was under investigation, the spokeswoman said.
Marco's grandmother, Esther Wojcicki, confirmed the student's identification.
“Tragedy struck my family yesterday. My beloved grandson Marco Troper, aged 19 passed away yesterday,” he wrote on Facebook on February 14. “Our family is devastated beyond comprehension.”
Marco, she added, “was the most kind, loving, smart, funny, beautiful human being” who had just started the second semester of his freshman year at UC Berkeley. He noted that he majored in math and “was loving it.”
“He had a strong community of friends from his dorm in Stern Hall and his Zeta Psi fraternity and was thriving academically. At home, he would tell us endless stories about his life and his friends at Berkeley,” he continued. “Marco's life was cut too short. And we are all devastated, thinking about all the opportunities and life experiences he will miss and that we will miss together. Marco, we all love you and miss you more than you will ever know.”
UC Berkeley campus police said there was no evidence of foul play.
UC Berkeley spokesman Adam Ratliff said counselors created “healing spaces” for students to deal with the victim's tragic death.
Wojcicki, who currently works as a senior adviser at Google and its parent company Alphabet, has not yet spoken publicly about her son's death.
